Indications

Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker used for:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Angina pectoris (chest pain)

• Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

• Post-myocardial infarction (early intervention in the acute phase)

Instructions

• Dosage:

  • Hypertension: 100 mg once daily; some patients may respond to 50 mg daily.

  • Angina pectoris: 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily.

  • Cardiac arrhythmias: 50–100 mg daily, given as a single dose.

  • Post-myocardial infarction: 100 mg daily for 6–9 days after the event.

• Administration: Take with or without food; swallow whole with water.

• Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with heart failure, diabetes, or renal impairment.

  • Avoid abrupt discontinuation; taper under medical supervision to prevent rebound hypertension.
