Indications

Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker used for:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Angina pectoris (chest pain)

• Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

• Post-myocardial infarction (early intervention in the acute phase)

Instructions

• Dosage:

  • Hypertension: 50 mg once daily; may increase to 100 mg daily if needed.

  • Angina pectoris: 50 mg twice daily; may increase to 100 mg daily if needed.

  • Cardiac arrhythmias: 25–50 mg once daily, often in combination with other medications.

  • Post-myocardial infarction: 100 mg once daily or divided doses for 6–9 days after the event.

• Administration: Take with or without food; swallow whole with water.

• Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with heart failure, diabetes, or renal impairment.

  • Avoid abrupt discontinuation; taper under medical supervision to prevent rebound hypertension.

  • Monitor heart rate and blood pressure regularly during treatment.
