Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia
 
Instruction
Adult: Inhalation Induction: Premedicated patient: Up to 5% v/v with oxygen. Unpremedicated patient: Up to 8% v/v. Maintenance: 0.5-3% v/v with or without nitrous oxide.
 
Drug interaction
Increased metabolism and toxicity w/ drugs that induce CYP2E1 isoenzyme (e.g. isoniazid). Reduced MAC w/ benzodiazepines, opioids. May cause ventricular arrhythmia w/ β-sympathomimetic agents (e.g. isoprenaline), and α- and β-sympathomimetic agents (e.g. adrenaline, noradrenaline). May cause crisis during operation w/ nonselective MAO inhibitors. May lead to marked hypotension and risk of additive negative inotropic effect w/ Ca antagonists (esp dihydropyridines).
Potentially Fatal: Rarely, may cause increased serum K levels resulting to cardiac arrhythmia w/ concomitant use of succinylcholine.
