Cephalexin monohydrate
 
Indication
Resp tract, ENT, O&G, skin & soft tissue, bone & dental infections, UTI. Prophylaxis of recurrent UTI. Gonorrhoea (when penicillin is unsuitable). Alternative to penicillin in the prophylaxis of heart patients undergoing dental treatment.
 
Instruction
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Chronic, severe or deep-seated infections 100 mg/kg daily. Max: 4 g daily. 7-12 yr 250-500 mg qds or 0.5-1 g bd, 3-6 yr 125-250 mg qds or 250-500 mg bd, 1-2 yr 62.5-125 mg qds or 125-250 mg bd, 0-1 yr 25-60 mg/kg daily.
 
Drug interaction
Oestrogen-containing OCs, probenecid, nephrotoxic drugs.
